Costly mating delays drive female ornamentation in a capital breeder

چکیده

How fecundity might be traded off with mate attraction and other aspects of reproduction in females remains poorly understood. We investigated these allocation trade-offs using the common glowworm (Lampyris noctiluca), a lampyrid beetle, which flightless, sedentary only use resources gathered during larval stage to attract flying males by glowing. While sexual signaling was not found have significant cost, delay successfully attracting greatly increased risk reproductive failure, losses being more severe small females. These findings are among first show that failure quickly can decrease female fecundity. The results also how length before mating drive evolution ornamentation.

I'm sexy and I glow it: female ornamentation in a nocturnal capital breeder.

In many species, males rely on sexual ornaments to attract females. Females, by contrast, rarely produce ornaments. The glow-worm (Lampyris noctiluca) is an exception where wingless females glow to attract males that fly in search of females. However, little is known about the factors that promote the evolution of female ornaments in a sexual selection context. Here, we investigated if the fema...

Can non-directional male mating preferences facilitate honest female ornamentation?

Recent studies have demonstrated male mate choice for female ornaments in species without sex-role reversal. Despite these empirical findings, little is known about the adaptive dynamics of female signalling, in particular the evolution of male mating preferences. The evolution of traits that signal mate quality is more complex in females than in males because females usually provide the bulk o...

The timing of male reproductive effort relative to female ovulation in a capital breeder.

1. In large herbivores, the timing of breeding is important for females to hit peak plant protein levels. For males, the timing of reproductive effort is important to maximize the number of females they can mate during autumn rut in competition with other males. The latter depends on when most females are ovulating, but also on how other males with a different competitive ability are timing use...

Female ornamentation influences male courtship investment in a lizard

*Correspondence: Devi Stuart-Fox, Zoology Department, The University of Melbourne, Building 147, Royal Parade, Parkville, VIC 3010, Australia e-mail: [email protected] Female signals of reproductive status often comprise both distinctive color patches and behaviors but their relative influence on male courtship investment is unclear. We examined the role of female-specific coloration in sign...

Effect of stress on female-specific ornamentation.

Signal honesty is theorized to be maintained by condition-dependent trait expression. However, the mechanisms mediating the condition dependence of sexually selected traits are often unknown. New work suggests that elevated glucocorticoid levels during physiological stress may play a role in maintaining signal honesty. Here, we experimentally examine the effect of both chronic and acute stress ...
